Carbon-Fibre -
Speed, Strength and Stability

From Formula 1 race cars to America's Cup yachts to High-Performance Aircraft, Carbon-Fibre is the material of choice.

IMS has designed the all new Premier series with an all Carbon-Fibre superstructure resulting in the most technologically advanced CMM ever. The entire superstructure (Bridge, Y main carriage, Y support leg and Z axis shaft) is made of the latest Carbon-Fibre materials.

Modular design of both the machine and manufacturing tooling has created a complete family of machines up to 3 Meters in length capable of both touch trigger probing and analog scanning, over 30 different models in all

Carbon Fibre is undeniably the ideal material for producing metrology systems. Virtually every engineering property of Carbon Fibre is superior to materials used in the past and after many years of developing the design and manufacturing know-how necessary to effectively make use of this amazing substance, IMS has produced the first all-carbon moving bridge superstructure of its kind.

Carbon Fibre has the highest Strength and Stiffness and the lowest Mass and Thermal Expansion of any material used for CMM  construction today.

This chart shows the Tensile Strength (in MPa) of the materials most commonly used in CMM contruction. Carbon Fibre is over 6 times stronger than the next strongest material
.

This chart shows the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (in ppm/deg K) of the materials most commonly used in CMM contruction. Carbon Fibre expands the least of any of these materials.

This chart shows the Mass of 1 cubic metre (in Kg.) of the materials most commonly used in CMM contruction. Carbon Fibre has the least Mass per unit volume of any of these materials.

This chart shows the Stiffness (in GPa) of the materials most commonly used in CMM contruction. Carbon Fibre is the stiffest of all of these materials.

Benefits of carbon fibre

  • Low Mass means higher acceleration with less power requirements.
  • Low Mass means less wear and tear on drive systems for higher reliability.
  • High Stiffness means less vibration in the moving structure for better accuracy.
  • Low Thermal Expansion means better performance in varying thermal environments.
